Based on experience in many other countries over the past 50 years, high speed rail can offer a wide range of potential benefits, from additional capacity to relieve increasingly busy rail and motorway networks to economic regeneration and regional rebalancing.

The UK government has now embarked on extensive public consultation over the first phase of the proposed High Speed 2 corridor between London, Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds, raising many questions about the financial and social benefits of high speed rail investment. Railway Gazette’s interactive wavecast on Wednesday June 8 explored many of the key issues. Registered viewers are now able to view an on-demand version of the debate which was streamed from the London Stock Exchange, along with the comments and questions posed to the panel during the debate.
